“SUNK!”

The little girl was saying her bedtime prayers. “God bless daddy. God bless mommy. God bless little sister. God bless my puppy. And God, take good care of yourself, because if anything happens to you, we are sunk!”

How right she was. Without God, we are sunk!

Paul waited in Athens for Silas and Timothy and disputed in the synagogue with devout persons in the market daily, and with anyone he had a chance to teach. Certain of the philosophers who liked to gather at Mars Hill invited him to speak to them, that they might learn his new doctrine. “For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.” (Acts 17:21).

As Paul spoke to the philosophers on Mars Hill, he said, “Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious. For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him I declare I unto you” (Acts 17:22-23).

In this city filled with altars to pagan gods everywhere, they did not know the true God, the Creator of all things, the God who does not dwell in temples made with human hands. The God made of one blood all nations, and governs our existence. “For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring” (Acts 17:28).

They listened until he spoke of the resurrection, when some mocked, and others said, “WE will hear thee again of this matter” (Acts 17:30). As Paul departed, some few believed, but most of them rejected his message, a message more readily received as he went on to Corinth. Think what the philosophers of Athens missed! They had the chance to learn about the one true God, but they threw it away. Sunk by their own ignorance, even as they claimed to be wise!

God’s Word

Exodus 14:10-14

10 And when Pharaoh drew near, the children of Israel lifted their eyes, and behold, the Egyptians marched after them. So they were very afraid, and the children of Israel cried out to the LORD.

11 Then they said to Moses, "Because there were no graves in Egypt, have you taken us away to die in the wilderness? Why have you so dealt with us, to bring us up out of Egypt?

12 Is this not the word that we told you in Egypt, saying, 'Let us alone that we may serve the Egyptians?' For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than that we should die in the wilderness."

13 And Moses said to the people, "Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which He will accomplish for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall see again no more forever.

14 The LORD will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace."

Live and Learn

I’ve learned that everyone wants to live at the top of the mountain, but all the happiness and growth occurs while you’re climbing it.

I’ve learned that doing something as a volunteer makes you feel better than if you were paid to do it.

I’ve learned that children need a lot more smiles and hugs than lectures and instructions.
