Bible Masculinity
or
God’s View of a Real Man

I. Some post-Father’s Day thoughts: The worldly view of a ‘real man’ – ‘macho’, image, money, clothes, cars,
looks, ‘playboy’, pride (line from a John Wayne movie – ‘Never apologize, it’s a sign of weakness.’) or the
typical sitcom view – clown, lazy, big kid, intimidated, etc.

II. But God’s View – ‘Biblical Masculinity’ – is very different.

* Adam (Genesis 1,2,3): substance – God in him; not just image (physical fitness-primarily for looks
or health; home – Eden ; job – tending the garden; rules – ‘thou shalt not eat of it’. When Adam did
not lead his family (Eve) in righteousness, many blessings lost!

* Joseph (Gen. 39-50) Whether he was in the pit, a slave, in prison, forgotten, a trustee, or 2nd in
command in Egypt , the Lord was with him, because he was always with the Lord. When Potiphar’s
wife laid hands on him out of lust, Joseph ran! Yes, sometimes the best thing a ‘real man’ can do
is stand firm, but when it comes to sexual temptation, real men run!

* Joshua and Caleb (Numbers 13 & 14): As the song says- “12 spies went to spy on Canaan , 10 were
bad and 2 were good”. The weak spies saw only ‘giants’; Joshua and Caleb saw ‘God’s rule
overall’. They said – ‘Let us go up at once –we are well able.” Real men don’t make politically
correct decisions base on the whims of the majority!

* Boaz (Ruth 2,3,4): He was a mighty man of war, business, and God’s word. He saw beyond the
outward beauty of Ruth to appreciate who she really was. And so the prostitute Rahab’s son
married faithful Ruth and brought a child into the ancestry of Christ. Real men “dwell with their
wives with understanding”- I Peter 3:7.

*Nehemiah: Notice his actions when he learns of Jerusalem being in ruins. Grief (real men cry real tears over
things that really matter); prayer; petitions from the King- real men know when to ask for help; planning;
organization; teamwork (real men are not a ‘one man show’ for glory); work; courage facing enemies;
completion (real men finish what they start); celebration (real men know there is a time to stop working),
maintenance.

*Elders, Deacons (I Timothy 3): It takes real men to be qualified leaders in the church. As you read the
qualifications, think about some principles contained in them – humility, meekness (strength under control),
teachability, approachability (by anyone in the congregation who has a need), accountability (to God and the
congregation).

*Jesus Christ – The greatest example of ‘a real man’. On earth, He was 100% man and 100% God. So all of
us as Christian men have changes to make, growing to do, and with God’s help we can!

-Tom

God’s Word

Ephesians 5:22-33
22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord.
23 For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body.
24 Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything.
25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her,
26 that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word,
27 that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish.
28 So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself.
29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church.
30 For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones.
31 "For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh."
32 This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
33 Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.
