ART THOU THE MAN?

Father’s Day weekend began with the tragic news of the death of newsman Tim Russert, host of “Face the Nation” on NBC. He will be remembered for his balanced reporting, a rarity in today’s political world. He was a good family man. His book, Big Russ & Me, was about growing up and the lessons he learned from his father. He died of a heart attack after traveling to Italy with his wife and son to celebrate his son’s Boston College graduation.

There are many reasons that his death might touch us – a noted figure, a good father, a man respected by all. Something else about his death struck me – his age. I did not know until his death that Tim Russert was my age (actually three months younger). His death surely made me think about the brevity of life!

Some times we don’t see certain things until we make a connection like this. David did not recognize the seriousness of his sin until Nathan opened his eyes.

There were two men in one city; the one rich, and the other poor. The rich man had
exceeding many flocks and herds: But the poor man had nothing, save one little ewe
lamb, which he had bought and nourished up: and it grew up together with him, and
with his children; it did eat of his own meat, and drank of his own cup, and lay in his
bosom, and was unto him as a daughter. And there came a traveler unto the rich man,
and he spared to take of his own flock and of his own herd, to dress for the wayfaring
man that was come unto him; but took the poor man’s lamb, and dressed it for the man
that was come to him. And David’s anger was greatly kindled against the man; and
he said to Nathan, As the LORD liveth, the man that hath done this thing shall surely
die: And he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he
had no pity. And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man (2 Samuel 12:1b-7a).

A favorite cartoon shows a family sitting in worship as the little boy exclaims, “Daddy, he’s talking about you!” The next time you hear a sermon, don’t just think of how others need to hear the lesson. Remember that it might just apply to you. Art thou the man?

God’s Word

Acts 26:1-11

1 Then Agrippa said to Paul, "You are permitted to speak for yourself." So Paul stretched out his hand and answered for himself:
2 I think myself happy, King Agrippa, because today I shall answer for myself before you concerning all the things of which I am accused by the Jews,
3 especially because you are expert in all customs and questions which have to do with the Jews. Therefore I beg you to hear me patiently.
4 My manner of life from my youth, which was spent from the beginning among my own nation at Jerusalem , all the Jews know.
5 They knew me from the first, if they were willing to testify, that according to the strictest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee.
6 And now I stand and am judged for the hope of the promise made by God to our fathers.
7 To this promise our twelve tribes, earnestly serving God night and day, hope to attain. For this hope's sake, King Agrippa, I am accused by the Jews.
8 Why should it be thought incredible by you that God raises the dead?
9 Indeed, I myself thought I must do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth.
10 This I also did in Jerusalem and many of the saints I shut up in prison, having received authority from the chief priests; and when they were put to death, I cast my vote against them.
11 And I punished them often in every synagogue and compelled them to blaspheme; and being exceedingly enraged against them, I persecuted them even to foreign cities.
