A VISION OF THE FUTURE?
The New Mexico Human Rights Commission has ruled that a wedding
photography business violated state discrimination laws when it declined
to shoot the “commitment ceremony” of a same-sex couple. The commission
ordered Elane Photography to pay $6,600 to cover the legal fees of the
same-sex couple who filed the complaint (World, May 17/24, 2008).
Fortunately, the Alliance Defense Fund has agreed to challenge the
ruling in state court. ADF senior counsel Jordan Lorence says that the
ruling ignores First Amendment protections for religious practice and
free speech. “This is compelled speech. You cannot use
non-discrimination laws to force private groups or individuals to
support a message they don’t agree with.”
With the recent decision by the California Supreme Court that denying
marriage to homosexual couples is unconstitutional: it is only a matter
time until churches in Alabama and elsewhere will be tested. What will
we do when a same-sex couple says that they want to use our building for
their wedding, and they want the local preacher to perform the ceremony?
That day is probably near. Will we have the fortitude to forfeit our tax
exempt status, or perhaps go to jail for our principles?
The Lord encouraged Joshua as he prepared to enter the Promised Land:
Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest
observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my
servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right
hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever
thou goest. This book of the law shall not depart out of
thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night,
that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written
therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and
then thou shalt have good success (Joshua 1:7-8).
In coming days of uncertainty, we need to do the same thing – be
courageous and stand on the word of God.

God’s Word
Mark 15: 33-41
33 Now when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the
whole land until the ninth hour.
34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying,
"Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?" which is translated, "My God, My
God, why have You forsaken Me?"
35 Some of those who stood by, when they heard that, said, "Look, He
is calling for Elijah!"
36 Then someone ran and filled a sponge full of sour wine, put it on
a reed, and offered it to Him to drink, saying, "Let Him alone; let
us see if Elijah will come to take Him down."
37 And Jesus cried out with a loud voice, and breathed His last.
38 Then the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.
39 So when the centurion, who stood opposite Him, saw that He cried
out like this and breathed His last, he said, "Truly this Man was
the Son of God!"
40 There were also women looking on from afar, among whom were Mary
Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the Less and of Joses, and
Salome,
41 who also followed Him and ministered to Him when He was in
Galilee; and many other women who came up with Him to Jerusalem.
